This is a history of Australian painting based on the ICI Australia collection – one of the country’s most extensive corporate collections. The book spans art and artists over the last 200 years using this collection as the framework. It is a story which goes back to convict drawings of Aboriginals and botanical specimens as new white eyes tried to come to terms with the new land. Artists covered include: McCubbin, Roberts, Condor, Streeton, Philips Fox, Meldru, Heyson, Boyd, Cossington-Smith, Dobell, Drysdale, Nolan, Rees, Hester, Perceval, Brack, Namatjira, Whiteley, Durrant, Olsen, Booth and more. Over 120 colour plates are complemented by black and white illustrations of the artists and their milieu. The photographs were gathered from many sources, including the private collection of Albert Tucker, and illustrate the setting for many of the works.
